Julie receives her award from the Secretary, John Couchman
Having completed a BSc in Genetics at the University of Manchester and a Wellcome Trust undergraduate research scholarship, Julie studied for a PhD under the supervision of Ray Boot-Handford and David Robertson (University of Manchester) investigating the evolution of the vertebrate extracellular matrix. Her research used bioinformatics to reveal that the vertebrate matrix arose during early vertebrate evolution, through duplication of ancestral genes into the multi-gene families present in the human genome, and was a key factor in underpinning the evolution of vertebrates. Julie is continuing her research on evolution and extracellular matrix at GlaxoSmithKline where she is currently looking at the impact of mammalian differences in matrix gene repertoire and matrix evolution within the brain and neural tissues.
